Neretva Battle Memorial Complex

Opened by President Tito in 1978, this complex was designed as a place of interactive learning about Yugoslav history and ideology. It features a museum, an amphitheater, and the famous destroyed railway bridge. At its heart is a monument featuring Tito’s legendary order: “We shall not leave the wounded behind.”

Neretva Battle Museum

Built in a modernist style, this museum overlooks the bridge where the Partisan army crossed with 4,000 wounded soldiers. It presents the original Yugoslav narrative of the "Battle for the Wounded" alongside modern research. We also learn about the 1969 Yugoslav film The Battle of Neretva starring Yul Brynner, which immortalized this story for an international audience.

Neretva Bridge

A crucial moment of the 1943 battle was when Tito ordered the bridge destroyed to deceive Axis forces about their retreat. As soon as the enemy withdrew from the east bank, the Partisans quickly repaired the bridge and escaped encirclement. We stop here to see the remains of the bridge and learn about this strategic masterpiece.

Tito’s Bunker

Built in complete secrecy over 15 years, this massive nuclear bunker was designed to shield the Yugoslav leadership underground for six months. We enter the complex for a guided tour of its communications center, map rooms, and private presidential suites, all preserved exactly as they were during the Cold War.
